Llubi is a village in Mallorca, Spain. The council was looking to increase the provision for Early Stages education facilities and organized and ideas competition published in late 2016.
The proposed building mimics the traditional construction methods and materials in the area. In addition to the aesthetic aspects, the strategy provides improved thermal performance. The projects leitmotiv is to obtain an outstanding ecological performance that would ensure a sustainable service life for the newly created building.
The conceptual approach to the project is based on a squared volume that contains the programme. The uses are organized in strips and divided into main and ancillary spaces, connected to a multi-purpose shared space. The square is ultimately broken by the introduction of lightwells and a module that accommodates the entrance.
The building faces the street, but it is slightly offset from the boundary line, providing a welcoming access and a safe dropping and picking up area for parents and children. On the other hand, the existing trees at the back of the site are retained as part of an outdoor classroom. The garden develops into little private gardens for each of the classrooms, conceiving a seamless and natural learning environment.
